India is entering a new era of warfare with the expansion of its hypersonic missile programme. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has confirmed the strategic expansion of the Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRAShM) project — transforming it from a naval-only weapon into a powerful multi-service hypersonic strike system for the Indian Armed Forces. Originally designed to strengthen India’s maritime dominance, LRAShM is now being developed into specialized variants for: The Indian Navy (anti-ship & coastal defence role) The Indian Army (surface-to-surface hypersonic deep strike capability) The Indian Air Force (air-launched hypersonic precision strike missions) LRAShM is a boost-glide hypersonic weapon system powered by a two-stage solid rocket motor that releases a Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV) in the upper atmosphere. Unlike traditional ballistic missiles, it follows a quasi-ballistic, unpredictable flight path, performing high-speed maneuvers and atmospheric skips while reaching speeds of up to Mach 10 — making it extremely difficult to detect, track, or intercept by modern radar and air defence systems. Weighing nearly 12 tonnes, LRAShM fills a critical gap in India’s missile ecosystem by providing: Conventional deep-strike capability Hypersonic penetration power Precision targeting of hardened infrastructure Strategic deterrence without nuclear escalation Nearly three times the range of the Pralay missile In naval warfare, LRAShM is designed to neutralize high-value targets such as aircraft carriers and large surface combatants by overwhelming layered defence systems. In land warfare, it enables India to strike command centres, fortified bunkers, and strategic infrastructure deep inside hostile territory. This programme represents DRDO’s “family of missiles” vision — a unified technology platform shared across Navy, Army, and Air Force variants — maximizing efficiency, integration, and strategic flexibility.
