Play the way you face. Don't turn into a defender every time. Key Points: 1. Stand with your body sideways, shoulder facing defender and dominant foot facing oncoming ball Don't stand with your back to the defender because you don't have good balance and they can easily knock you off ball. Turn body so you are naturally stronger and have more balance when contact is made. Get your arm out too to feel where they are. The defender needs to be tight on you for this to work. If they are a few steps off you they can read this play more easily. 3. As the ball gets a few feet from you, step left and drop your shoulder like you are going to run left. Then turn at an angle going forward towards the goal with the outside of your right foot on the ball. Note that if you make your step left to early and the ball is to far away from you the defender will see the ball, realize you don't have it and not fall for the fake. Make sure the ball is a few feet away from you so the defender can't see it because your body acts like a shield and they fall for the fake. 4. As you are turning bring your right arm around to push off the defender. This causes them to go back a bit and push you forward. Don't foul! But make this arm motion part of your turn. 5. Your turn should put you in the direction of the goal, not going sideways from the goal. Equipment Needed: You need a partner, two cones, as many balls as you have and a goal if you have one. Exercise Player Can Do: Your partner is at the start cone. You are at the defender cone 15 yards straight ahead of the start cone. You want the goal about 20 yards behind you. Have your partner pass you the ball. As it gets closer do your move and turn on the cone and then pass or shoot the ball in the net. Light jog back and repeat. Go through all your balls. Then repeat this exercise. After switch with your partner and continue switching until you are tired. Things to Note: The pass from your partner should be at a slower pace. As you feel more confident increase the speed of the pass to make this exercise more challenging. If you have three people, have your third partner be the defender on your back. They don't try to win it, they are there to show the movement of what a defender will do and help make this exercise more realistic for you. If you don't have a partner you can use a fence for this exercise as your partner. The exercise would look like this. What Player Could Be Doing Wrong: If the defender is always winning the ball from you when you try this move it could be two things. First, you are doing the motion of your move when the ball is to far away from you and the defender is not falling for it because she can see you don't have the ball yet. Second the defender needs to be tight on you for this move to usually work. If the defender is a few steps off you then they can see the move coming more easily. If they aren't real tight, don't try this. Bonus Tip: Be confident when you do this move! If you mess up you have to be prepared to accept the criticism of your teammates and coaches. Maybe you don't get it every time, but the third time you try it you score a beauty!! Believe in it®!
