It’s been said that prostitution is the world’s oldest profession. So, it should really come as no surprise it’s been the focus of so many movies over the years. Yes, the reality is that sex sells and this is no different when it comes to the big screen as people are always happy to pay to see stories covering the subject. And that’s led to filmmakers looking at sex work from a variety of different angles over the years, whether this be ones which treat the job in a lighter tone or those who look at some of its darker, seedier aspects instead. After all, it has to be noted that there’s a complex web of reasons why someone might choose to sell their body. Maybe it’s financial, maybe it’s because it something they enjoy, or maybe it’s because they’re being forced into it. So, just telling one on screen story of how prostitution works is never going to be enough as it simply can’t cover the full dimension of the profession. No, in order to get the entire scope, you have to look at a number of different movies, many of which are included in today’s video. Take Young & Beautiful or Taxi Driver for example, both of which explore the idea of young women who get involved in this world. Each of these has a slightly different take on the idea of underage girls selling themselves. And that’s because the former shows someone choosing to do so, with them even going as far as to lie about their age in order to get work, while the latter implies the decision has been mostly taken out of their hands by their pimp. Then there’s something like House of Tolerance, a French drama which take a much more familial look at this subject as it shows the camaraderie between a group of girls living in a brothel. Sure, they don’t always get along but then that’s life, and this is what such a film looks to show us. That prostitution is just another part of life for these women. That said, not all movies covering the topic have such a positive tone to them. No, others like Lilya-4-Ever and Requiem for a Dream delve deep into the darker side of the profession. In fact, the former specifically takes a look at the horrifying reality of sexual slavery and human trafficking, all while the latter shows how drug addiction can sometimes cause someone to slip into selling their body in order to pay for their habit. And as if that isn’t bad enough, in Klute we see how truly dangerous being a prostitute can sometimes be as in this one the story hinges on a girl who ends up allowing a client to get too close to her and as a result becomes a victim of stalking. But that shouldn’t suggest the relationship between sex worker and customer is always so negative. No, on plenty of occasions it can still be far more positive. In fact, this very topic is covered in other films in this video like Leaving Las Vegas, True Romance, and Pretty Woman, each of which show a client meeting and then falling in love with the girl in question, and for that girl to ultimately reciprocate those feelings. Does this happen in real life? Probably not as much as some men who frequent call girls would like to think but it no doubt has been a reality for a select few. And the same truth can be found in Nights of Cabiria as well, a film which follows a young sex worker through her life in Italy for a few days, exploring who she is as a person in the process. After all, at the end of the day, no matter what someone does for a living, they are a human being just the same as anyone else.
