Songs I–IX for actor-percussionist (1980–1982) by Stuart Saunders Smith Finding My Voice: Hoi Tong Keung DMA Recital II Walter Hall, University of Toronto | March 15, 2024 Recording and mixing: Fish Yu - Songs I–IX (1980–1982) by American composer and poet Stuart Saunders Smith is a collection of short movements for an “actor percussionist.” Smith is fascinated by the sounds of the English language. When writing poems which he calls speech songs, he picks words not by their meanings, but by their rhythm and sounds; it is by coincidence when the text makes sense. His instrumental music is also influenced by the flow of speech rhythm. When notated on paper, however, the natural speech flow turns into seemingly complicated tuplets and polyrhythms. Songs I–IX is a typical piece by Smith that it uses the English language in a non-semantic way and features tuplets in the instrumental interludes. However, the instrumentation of Songs I–IX is unique because it is written for mostly household items. The actor percussionist portrays different characters; as an untrained actor, this piece encourages me to explore the possibilities of my speaking voice.
