Princes Charles and Harry present medals to soldiers at Buckingham Palace. Princes Charles and Harry have presented medals to Gurkha soldiers at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, London, Tuesday (14 MAR. 2017). The Prince of Wales, Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Gurkha Rifles, led tributes to Gurkha soldiers who have taken part in a campaign to help bring peace to Afghanistan. The Gurkhas have gained a reputation for bravery and loyalty throughout the two centuries they have served with British forces. Princes Charles and Harry awarded Operational Service Medals to 2nd Battalion the Royal Gurkha Rifles after their return from Operation Toral, the U.K. mission to secure key sites within Kabul, Afghanistan, in December 2016. Charles's links to the Royal Gurkha Rifles date back to 1977, when he became Colonel-in-Chief of the 2nd King Edward VII's Own Gurkha Rifles. Harry served with the 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles during his tour of Afghanistan in 2007-08. The ceremony featured traditional Nepalese music. Prince Charles unveiled an oil painting of the Gurkhas, commissioned to celebrate 200 years of service to the Crown.
