Produced from 1983 to early 1988, the Rolex GMT Master II 16760 was the first of the GMT Master 2 series with the ability to set and display two independent time zones on the dial. Firsts abounded; the first stainless steel Rolex GMT to feature a sapphire crystal; the first Rolex GMT Master II "Coke" bezel with red and black sectors; the first Rolex GMT with gloss dial and white gold indices and hands. Moreover, the watch's more complicated Rolex caliber 3085 and commensurately thicker case resulted in (loving) nicknames such as "Fat Lady" and Sophia Loren. Often described as part of the "transitional" Rolex watch series from the 1980s, the rare and pioneering 16760 reference is an emerging vintage Rolex collector's item while remaining an eminently wearable modern watch.
