Poles rush to border to help fleeing Ukrainians

(27 Feb 2022) As hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees fled war in their country, Ukrainians and other nationals living in nearby countries rushed to help them. In the town of Przemysl, in southeastern Poland, a few kilometers from a border crossing with Ukraine, hundreds of people waited in a supermarket car park for buses bringing refugees from the crossing. Holding placards with the names of people they were waiting for, or of cities they could take people to, the Poles offered to take the fleeing Ukrainians to places of safety. Some offered rides to the Czech Republic. "Have you seen these small children? We have to help. We have to help," said one man in Polish. A Polish man from Gdansk said: "We are here to help the Ukrainians, to take them to a safe place. I will be taking them to Gdansk. We are also offering them accommodation. We are doing it all for free." A message in Cyrillic on one car read: "I am offering accommodation in the Czech Republic for a family with children. Three people for three months, free of charge."
