Rib Fracture: 3 Serious Complications To Watch For | Aleks Physio

Rib Fracture: When Is It a Serious Concern Hello everyone, In this video, I go over 3 adverse events that can be associated with a rib fracture(s). 1. Flail chest - This is when there is a 3 or more fractures in 2 different places that creates a chest wall deformity and compromises the structural integrity of the chest wall. This is because the bones are basically floating at this moment and can lead to paradoxical breathing and compromise lung function. It is more common in the elderly and may lead to serious complications if not recognized. Some may require surgery. It may also result in death. 2. Internal organ injury - Because the main function of the chest wall is to protect the vital organs, if there is a rib fracture (or more commonly multiple rib fractures), there may be an associated injury to these organs (kidney, liver, spleen, heart and lungs). I focus on the first 3 in today’s scenario. This is where other symptoms other than pain are present, such as tachypnea (increased respiratory rate), shortness of breath, blood in urine, nausea,vomitting, etc, which may indicate internal organ injury and bleeding. This may need to be surgically treated depending on the severity. An ultrasonography can be used to assess the health of the internal organs and where or not there is any injury associated. 3. Hemo or Pneumothorax - This is where air or fluid builds up in the space between the lungs and the parietal pleura (outer layer). Small pneumothoces can heal on their own, however, larger ones may require a chest tube insertion to reduce the pressure and build up of air. Some may be put on suction in order to achieve this balance and restore function of the lungs. With a hemothorax, blood builds up in this space, which requires a chest tube in order to remove and return the lung to normal function. Have you had a rib fracture or fractures?
