Leaving a high-control religious environment doesn’t automatically undo the system we were trained in. In this video, we talk about survivor hierarchy — the unspoken ranking system that can follow people out of cult-like or spiritually abusive environments. We explore how trauma hierarchy is learned inside authoritarian churches — and how it can continue even after people leave. In this conversation, we discuss: • Why some survivors minimize or compete with other survivors• How high-control religion trains people to rank spiritual “worth”• The vulnerability it takes to admit we were victims• The humbling truth that leaving wasn’t always about merit — sometimes it was timing, support, or even luck• Why abusive parents are still often defended and demanded to be “respected” in Christian systems We also address something many people experience but don’t say out loud: Mainstream Christians often view those trapped in Christian cults as spiritually inferior — or “not real Christians.” Instead of recognizing coercive control and spiritual abuse, the blame subtly shifts onto the people who were inside. That narrative reinforces hierarchy. It suggests that if someone had “stronger faith” or “better discernment,” they wouldn’t have been deceived. And that belief protects the broader system while isolating survivors. This is not an attack on Christians or survivors. It’s an honest look at how narcissistic and authoritarian religious systems condition people to rank, judge, and distance themselves from vulnerability. Spiritual abuse doesn’t just shape what we believed. It shapes how we see power, victimhood, and each other. If you’ve experienced religious trauma, spiritual abuse, cult dynamics, authoritarian church leadership, or high-control Christianity, you’re not alone. Healing sometimes requires confronting uncomfortable patterns — including the ones we unknowingly carried with us.
