During a timing belt check there were no obvious cracks or damages, but the tension of the belt seemed to be wrong. The Toyota Avensis build about 1998 has run for about 70 000 km. The timing belt condition is critical because of very expensive repair in case of timing belt damage. The timing belt replacement interval should be for the most cars every 10 years or 100 000 km. The car still works fine, but to prevent a major damage the tension was corrected almost WITHOUT any dissassembly. Usually the timing belt exchange is very time consuming and troublesome, because you need to remove many external belt wheels and work on a very limited space. We found a way to setup the timing belt tension using a timing belt mounting screw inspection hole. The hole is covered by a round rubber in the size of a screw head. We used a wooden stick and push it from top to buttom against the timing belt tensioner roll. Then the scre was loosened and the wooden road pushed more downwards against the roll. The result can be seen in the next video. Attention: we are hobbiests mechanics, in our case we took the risk not knowing the regular factory service procedures for such case. We don't know if the timing belt mounting screw has to be replaced, it has just been loosened and tightened back. The timing belt replacement takes about 600 euros in a Toyota garage. And they definietely would recommend you to change the belt, not to correct the tension. For this word you need to remove the engine cover, replace the gaskets and as was mentioned before it is not a service friendly concept, especially to a hobbiest without recommended tools. But it seems to work. We won some time and thus we saved money. The timing belt will since now be checked every month for its condition and tension. Due to the 50Hz frame rate you may not see the actual issue here because of the strobo effect. Still the major point can be observerd, especially compared to the second video where the corrected timing belt tension is shown.
