Ian Parker and David Pavon-Cuellar, authors of Psychoanalysis and Revolution: Critical Psychology for Liberation Movements (1968 Press, 2021), draw on psychoanalysis to argue for connecting social transformation with personal liberation. As part of the discussion, Parker and Pavon-Cuellar share reflections on questions that include: the necessity or (im)possibility of revolution; the connection between psychoanalysis, conflict and revolution, and what Psychoanalysis and Revolution can teach communities, community activists, human rights defenders and more. Parker and David Pavon-Cuellar were speaking at 'Psychoanalysis and Revolution', a conversation that was held online on 15 February 2024 as part of the 2024 Leicester Human Rights Arts and Film Festival's slow festival which is hosting a series of events throughout the year in preparation for the main festival which runs from the 4th till the 10th of December this year. About the speakers Ian Parker is a psychoanalyst working in Manchester in the north of England. He is a Marxist, and member of different left groups and campaigns. Much of his academic work has been concerned with writing and promoting versions of ‘critical psychology’, different ways of developing theoretical alternatives to mainstream psychology and practical initiatives to address human distress. David Pavón-Cuéllar is a professor in the faculties of psychology and philosophy at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, in the city of Morelia, state of Michoacán, Mexico. He is a Marxist and participates in radical Left collectives in Mexico. His academic work develops at the intersection of Lacanian psychoanalysis, Marxist theory, and critical psychology. The festival aims to draw attention to human rights issues at home and abroad as well as draw attention to Human Rights Day which is marked around the world on 10 December. This year, the festival draws attention to calls for ceasefires around the world and raises awareness around the crime of genocide, and has declared the month of December to be both Ceasefire Month and Genocide Awareness Month; 4-10 December to be both Ceasefire Week and Genocide Awareness Week; and 10 December, which is Human Rights Day, and December 25 (Christmas Day) to be Ceasefire and Genocide Awareness days.
