Lovecraft's stories, and lovecraftian products, The Shadow over Innsmouth (1931) is one of the few stories that still resists being officially brought to the big screen, a surprising reticence, since it is his most action-oriented story. The nearest we have to an official adaptation is the Japanese Insumasu o ouu Kage (Jun Nasuda, 1992), and it is a far cry from the original short story. However, The Shadow over Innsmouth was adapted to film, with great success and notable fidelity in moments, although not officially, in the Fantastic Factory production "Dagon" (Stuart Gordon, 2001). "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" was originally to be produced by Vestron, with Stuart Gordon as director and Dennis Paoli as screenwriter. Since the project exceeded the 5 million budget, it was cancelled. Charles Band tried to bring it back as a production of Full Moon (1985/1991), but again the budget was too small. It was a very ambitious project. Brian Yuzna picked up the project for Filmax, under the Fantastic Factory brand, along with the original team: Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli. They retitled it Dagon, for marketing purposes. A lot of material was used, including several of Bernie Wrightson's concept art. The Shadow over Innsmouth was always Stuart Gordon's favorite Lovecraft story.
