James Kalm finds himself in Washington DC, and as is his custom, he drops into the Smithsonian American Museum of Art to tour “The Art of Bill Traylor Between Worlds”. This show is perhaps the most extensive and fully realized presentation of Traylor’s work. With nearly 200 works, “Between Worlds” is grouped in several classifications of subject from “Exciting Events” to “Dogs” and demonstrates the unique diversity and inventiveness of this artist. “Bill Traylor (ca.1853-1949) is regarded today as one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century. A black man born into slavery in Alabama, he was an eyewitness to history—the Civil War, Emancipation, Reconstruction, Jim Crow segregation, the Great Migration and the steady rise of the African American urban culture in the south.” In his mid 80’s Traylor, who was homeless, living in Montgomery Alabama, began creating these drawings and paintings using only pencil, crayons and poster paint on found pieces of cardboard. His design, narrative, and color sense establish Traylor as an essential voice of modern art and the American experience. https://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/betw...
