Interview: Katharina Friedla, Ph.D. — Researcher and Curator of the Taube Family European Collections at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives, Stanford University During international conference “Museum and Trauma – Museums as a Safe Space to Deal with the Dark Side of Humanity”, the Sybir Memorial Museum hosted leading experts from around the world who examined the legacy of violence, repression, and forced migration. Among the invited speakers was Katharina Friedla, a historian and curator of the Taube Family European Collections at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives at Stanford University. Katharina Friedla is a recognized historian specializing in the history of Eastern Europe and Jewish communities. She has held academic and advisory positions at universities and research institutions in Germany, Poland, and Israel. Her body of work includes research on nationalism, identity politics, state ideology, and the complex processes of forced migration in 20th-century Europe. She is the author of numerous publications, including her latest edited volume, Polish Jews in the Soviet Union (1939–1959): History and Memory of Deportation, Exile, and Survival. At the Sybir Memorial Museum conference, Friedla focused on the experiences of Polish Jewish children deported deep into the Soviet Union in the final years of World War II. Drawing on archival records and survivors’ testimonies, she analysed the fate of these young deportees, many of whom eventually joined Anders’ Army and escaped to the Middle East, building new lives outside the Soviet sphere of influence. Her work sheds light on the broader history of forced migration, the impact of state violence on the most vulnerable, and the enduring significance of memory and testimony. In this interview — part of our series featuring international guests at the “Museum and Trauma..” conference — Katharina Friedla discusses her research on the fate of Polish children in Soviet camps, the legacy of displacement, and the role of archives and museums in preserving these histories for future generations.
