6. HERE, THERE, UP AND DOWN from the album JAZZ JUNCTION (May 29, 2025) Composed and arranged by Roberto Tola This TRACK is almost an exercise in style, an impromptu game that makes the guitar notes jump up and down, like crazy pinball machines. These jumps, which experts call “intervals,” are the key to this sound game. In music, intervals indicate the distance between a starting note and a finishing note. They can be quick and wide jumps or light and delicate movements, creating a dynamic and lively effect, just like the pinball machines that bounce. This explains the original title of this new composition by Roberto Tola: Here, There, Up and Down. To better understand this concept, imagine walking on a floor of stones, arranged next to each other in a square. Each stone represents a note, and the movements from one stone to another are the intervals. Sometimes you take small steps, almost touching the stone next to you, other times you make large leaps, twirling with grace and passion from one distant stone to another. But what happens with intervals in music also happens in life. We walk or jump from one stone to another along a path or trail, sometimes with awareness, other times taking risks, always with the aim of reaching a goal, a finish line. Every jump, every step, is a choice that brings with it emotions, challenges and discoveries. In this piece, what might seem like a simple technical exercise takes on a deeper, almost esoteric meaning. These jumps and steps create a rhythm and a movement that tell stories of life, of love, of intense emotions. Intervals are not simple distances between two notes, but bearers of symbolic, spiritual and metaphysical meanings. As in music, also in life the jumps of intervals give life to a dialogue made of emotions, just like the steps of a dance, where every movement tells a story and every jump is a gesture full of feeling. The solos are once again the prerogative of Roberto Tola's guitar and the pianist Luciano De La Rosa.
