In Sarajevo, even the skyscrapers have a sense of humor – and their own sitcom. Meet Momo i Uzeir, the twin towers that sound less like office blocks and more like two old friends arguing over whose coffee is better, Bosnian or Turkish. Born in the 1980s in Marijin Dvor, they were designed by architect Ivan Štraus, all glass, concrete and Yugoslav optimism, and quickly became symbols of modern Sarajevo. Officially they belong to UNITIC, a serious-sounding investment and trading company; unofficially, everyone just calls them by their nicknames, taken from a beloved Radio Sarajevo comedy duo – a Serb and a Bosniak, constantly bickering and teasing each other on air. In true Bosnian fashion, people in the city have spent decades debating which tower is Momo and which is Uzeir, and never really agreed – which is perhaps the most Sarajevo outcome possible. During the siege of Sarajevo the towers were heavily shelled and burned, stripped almost to their concrete bones, yet they refused to fall, standing there like two stubborn jokers who’ve decided that if anyone’s going to leave this party, it’s not going to be them. Post‑war, they were renovated, reclad in reflective glass and returned to their role as office towers, but now with an extra layer of character: when you walk past them, you don’t just see real estate, you see two veterans of the city skyline, gossiping silently about everything they’ve witnessed since 1986. Today they host businesses, meetings and endless coffee breaks, while quietly reminding everyone that Sarajevo’s mix of tragedy, absurdity and warmth can somehow coexist in two 100‑metre‑tall “characters” named like a comedy duo. If you listen closely, you can almost hear them: one tower complaining about the wind, the other one replying, “Ma pusti, važan je pogled,” (Oh, come on, the view is important) and both of them still refusing to tell you which one is which.
