I Am a Surgical Nurse | Cincinnati Children’s

http://www.cincinnatichildrens.org I am a nurse. I am a nurse. A listener. A team player. Compassionate thinker. A voice for my patient. Reliable. Friendly. A trailblazer. I am a nurse. My name is Brooke Barganier, and I am a registered nurse here at Cincinnati Children's. I currently work in the same-day surgery area, which is part of our perioperative division. I get the patients ready for surgery. I educate them about what to expect falling asleep and some things to expect after surgery and just really try to build a report of trust with the families so that that starts them off on a good foot as they pass through the OR and then the recovery room. At the age of 12, I was diagnosed with meningioma and different types of benign brain tumors. And so then that led me to have, now, 24 different brain surgeries, radiations and chemotherapies, all involved here at Children's and at UC. So I was around nurses a lot, and I saw how the nurse can make a difference. They had this unique opportunity to touch someone's life when they were most vulnerable and I watch them help me through each procedure, I watch them help my parents cope with just the difficulty of having a daughter that has to go through this. I can also empathize with the parents and the patients too, because I've gone through this. So, I knew from about age twelve I was going to be a nurse. I remember one situation, I had a patient that was struggling about going to prom because she didn't have hair, she was going through chemo, you know, she didn't look like herself. She was swollen with the steroids. And she goes, "I can't go, I can't go." And I had actually missed my prom because I was insecure about how I look, because at that time I didn't have hair and I didn't look like- and I thought, "Oh no." And I remember having the opportunity to talk with her and tell her, like, "Go, because this, this is temporary. This is not permanent. Who you are is here, not here. This is you." And that patient went to prom and they brought pictures back and it was awesome. I got to see all the pictures and it looked like, and not just from the stories, I knew she had a good, good time. One of the nursing professors that I had in college really gave me good advice, and she said, "Brooke, the character of a nurse is just as important as knowing the nursing processes, knowing all of the data. Who you are and how you treat and interact with people, they'll remember that." I have learned to take life one day at a time and I don't put a limit on things either. So I don't know what the future holds, but I know that I will go one day at a time and I am very happy about where I am right now and I really love working here at same-day. I think that I'm being used to hopefully help encourage people and provide some hope and this is where I should be right now. It's fun to be a big kid, because that's pretty much what I am, is a large child taking care of kids with, like, you know, some seriousness. My name is Brooke, and I am a nurse.
