Kamloops, British Columbia, CANADA - 1998 Skate Canada International, Figure Skating, Men's Short Program - Evgeny Plushenko of Russia placed 2nd after this skate. This season, the ISU has made changes to the scoring by creating the "One Beats One" system. The creation of this came as a result of the media outcry in trying to figure out the changes in the standings after each skater has completed the Free Skate (ie: 1997 Europeans - After the last skater in the Men's Event skated (Germany's Andrej Vlaschenko), the ordinals (or rankings) he received from the 9 judges were all over the place (ranging from 3rd to 8th, I believe). Thereby, it caused a shifting of the standings from 1st - Zagorodniuk, 2nd - Urmanov, 3rd - Kulik, 4th - Candeloro to the final standings of 1st - Urmanov, 2nd - Candeloro, 3rd - Zagorodniuk, 4th - Kulik. The shifting of the standings further confused the media as the standings before the Men's Free Skate had Kulik in 1st, while Urmanov was in 6th. To rectify this, the ISU created the OBO system, where once a skater beats another skater in the Free Skate, then for the rest of the competition, the standings between those 2 skaters will not change, and so on and so on with the rest of the skaters in a competition.
