Villeman Og Magnhild (from Norwegian “Villeman and Magnhild”) is a folk song popular among Norse Vikings. It is a marching and rowing song traditionally sung by tough bearded Viking men who were crossing the sea on ominous drakkars. Actually, a certain performance (approved in the modern folk environment) exudes North severity and Nordic pathos. It’s all about specific stanzas’ structure, where the 2nd and the 4th stanzas repeat continuously and the composition acquires a kind of “marching colour”. Initially, the lyrics of “Villeman” were written down by Norwegian folklorist Moltke Moe in the 1920s and were published in the book “Norske Folkevisor”. The ballad itself tells us about a girl Magnhild and her grief: she believed that she was destined to drown in a river. Her fiancé, Villeman, tried to prove that the river was not a threat to her and that’s why he built a big and sturdy bridge. Having gathered local folk, he decided to take Magnhild across the bridge. Although, his horse stumbled on the bridge and fell off together with his fiancée. Then Villeman went to the riverbank intending to take Magnhild back from the river troll. He started playing his harp under a beautiful lime tree which grew there and the melody was so charming that it forced the monster to show up to the surface. After that, the man hit the troll’s head with his harp took his power and set his betrothed free. The ending part of the ballad formed the basis of many of its modern interpretations. Lyrics: Villemann gjekk seg te storan a, Hei fagraste lindelauvi alle Der han ville gullharpa sla For de runerne de lyster han a vinne Villemann gjenge for straumen a sta, Hei fagraste lindelauvi alle Mesterleg kunne han gullharpa sla For de runerne de lyster han a vinne Han leika med lente, han leika med gny, Hei fagraste lindelauvi alle Han leika Magnhild av nykkens arm For de runerne de lyster han a vinne Da slo han si harpe til bonns i sin harm, Hei fagraste lindelauvi alle Og utvinner krafti av trollenes arm For de runerne de lyster han a vinne. ➤FOLLOW US Vkontakte: https://vk.com/gileadfolk Facebook: / gileadfolk Instagram: / gilead_band ➤SUPPORT ITunes: / gilead Bandcamp: https://gileadfolk.bandcamp.com Soundcloud: / gilead-band Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/music/a...
