Meirionnydd is one of the oldest territorial names in Wales - older than counties, older than shires, and older than many Welsh kingdoms themselves. In this video, we explore how Meirionnydd began as an early medieval Welsh kingdom, evolved into a cantref under native Welsh law, and later became the historic county known in English as Merionethshire. Unlike many regions whose boundaries were imposed or invented, Meirionnydd shows an unbroken line of continuity: kingdom → cantref → county. This is not a story of replacement, but of succession - shaped by geography, preserved by tradition, and surviving long after modern administrative boundaries erased it on paper. If you’re interested in Welsh history, historic counties, or the deep origins of Britain’s regions, this story matters. 🔔 Subscribe for more British and Welsh history 📤 Share if you believe historic places deserve to be remembered and celebrated
