Episode 25 of Piping Up with Stephen Regec Welcome to Episode 7 of our 8-part series, where we explore Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, PA's grand and historic pipe organs. Join us on a fascinating journey into the world of digital and hybrid organs, featuring a one-of-a-kind instrument created by renowned organist Mark Pall. Built and housed in a custom-designed, soundproofed studio behind his home, this organ represents the perfect merge of technology, artistry, and passion. The studio itself is optimized for organ performance, with both facade pipes and state-of-the-art speakers expertly concealed to enhance the immersive soundscape. At the heart of this incredible instrument are two complete organs meticulously designed to work together as one. The organ uses the highly advanced Hauptwerk digital organ technology combined with the legacy of an Allen Organ, resulting in a total of around 197 sampled pipe ranks. Fusing the Concert 125 organ sample set with Allen's digital stops has created a truly dynamic and responsive instrument. Every note and every rank has been expertly revised by Mark to deliver the best possible sound, showcasing his deep understanding of both organ design and performance. The Concert 125 sample set incorporates pipe samples from various organs, drawing inspiration from the rich tonal traditions of English-style organs. These samples, provided by Silver Octopus Studios, include some of the most iconic sounds in organ history. Additionally, Mark's organ boasts sampled ranks from famous makers like Casavant and Aeolian-Skinner, adding depth and variety to the overall sonic palette. While the visually striking facade pipes include ranks like a 16' Bourdon, 8' Principal, and 4' Octave, these pipes are non-winded and purely decorative. However, the organ also features several fully winded ranks which add to the beauty of the full organ. Thewinded ranks include notable voices such as: 8' Trumpet en Chamade (maker unknown) 8' Grand Cornopean (Aeolian-Skinner) 16' Contre Pousane (E.M. Skinner/Möller) 16' Gross Bordon (Möller), all on 7” wind. Additionally, the 8' Golden Tuba (Wurlitzer) on 10” wind has been mounted as of this video release but was not installed at the time of filming. It will soon be fully functional and is awaiting final tuning. Beyond the extraordinary pipe samples, the organ's audio system is a feat of engineering in itself. Powered by 12,000 watts of raw audio power, the organ's sound is projected through 14 custom-built speaker cabinets and 3 18” subwoofers, providing a thunderous yet crystal-clear experience. These speakers, including Klipsch RP-500s, Allen pp-5s, Allen HR-15s, and Allen Antiphonal Projectors, are all hidden behind facade pipes or integrated into the walls, ensuring a clean and uninterrupted visual space while maximizing the acoustic environment. This remarkable blend of tradition and innovation makes Mark Pall's organ a true standout in the world of digital and hybrid instruments. Don’t miss this exclusive video showcasing the full range of this organ’s capabilities, from its delicate flutes to its powerful trumpets, all enhanced by the latest in organ sampling and speaker technology.
