Ken Fisher, founder, Executive Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer of Fisher Investments, reviews what market corrections are and how they differ from other negative market events—such as bear markets. According to Ken, corrections—defined as market declines of 10% to 20%—are common and can arise for any reason, or no reason, during bull markets. Importantly, he says corrections are short-term and predominantly driven by shifts in sentiment rather than a material weakening of economic fundamentals. Ken emphasizes corrections are frequently paired with sensational stories or alarming narratives that dominate headlines and spark fear. While Ken acknowledges these stories may feel meaningful in the moment, he says the fundamental impact is often overstated. Ken highlights the role our emotions play in shaping our perspective and says feelings of optimism and pessimism are natural in response to how markets have performed recently. However, corrections can exploit these emotions and tempt investors into making decisions that may not be in their best interest. While corrections can be difficult to stomach, Ken says they can be healthy for bull markets, as they reset investor expectations and rebuild the wall of worry stocks love to climb. Ken encourages investors to stay disciplined during corrections, which are typically short-term and instead focus on their long-term goals.
