The things that Nelson Mandela missed the most during his many years on Robben Island was the joyful presence of little children—their sweet little voices, silky-smooth skin, and tiny little hands. Aptly, before he passed on, he tasked his team with building a much-needed children’s healthcare facility, for all the children of Africa. Building the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital turned out to be a lot harder than anyone had imagined. But the spectacular success of the project once again proved that, as Mandela himself would say, “It always seems impossible until it is done.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
