SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Tuesday, October 7, 2025 — Santa Monica Police officers on routine patrol at Palisades Park cited one man for smoking in a designated no-smoking area. The citation was issued without incident after officers observed the individual violating the city’s smoking ordinance. In a separate encounter within the park, other officers detained a man seen holding a cigar. The individual told officers the cigar was unlit and that he was not smoking. After verifying his record, officers released him without further action. Santa Monica’s municipal code 4.44.020 prohibits smoking in public spaces such as parks, beaches, and promenades. The ordinance aims to protect public health, reduce fire hazards, and maintain clean community spaces.
