When transplanting trees, the FIRST step is in the Fall to 1.) cut a diameter(dependent on girth of tree trunk) around the tree. The purpose of this, is to kill the outward stretching ROOTS to cause the tree to send new roots out during the DORMANT season (winter). Then, by transplanting time in SPRING, the new roots will not have extended beyond the circumference you dug in the fall. Therefore, the tree will have formed ONE ROOT BALL which will enable you to transplant the tree with the NATIVE SOIL. Be careful while removing the tree, get intimate with the tree and use your hands to CAREFULLY remove the tree from the soil. Then, put the tree in a BIODEGRADABLE SAC like burlap, and plant it in the new location. Before removing the tree from the forest, select where you are going to plant the tree in the yard and dig a hole. Consider overhead UTILITY LINES, distance to the house, proximity to septic tank and drain field (If applicable) slope, and direction. Make sure to plant the trees away from power lines overhead and far enough AWAY from the HOUSE so if it falls during a storm, it will not land on the house. BEFORE transplanting the tree into the new location, take a tool and loosen the outer edges of the new hole that have become compacted from the shovel because this compaction will negatively effect new root growth. Then plant the tree in its new location and sing a song! Also, make sure to mulch around the tree to increase the water holding capacity of the soil, to add nutrients and soil enhancing properties like microorganisms, earthworms, and beneficial fungi.
