Afanasyev was killed on December 21 on the frontline around the Luhansk region, according to local media. He was known for his defence of Crimea following Russia's 2014 illegal annexation. Afanasyev was detained in Russian-occupied Crimea and later released in a prisoner exchange in 2016. Despite suffering injuries during his captivity, Afanasyev returned to the battlefield to defend Ukraine after the full-scale invasion by Russia on February 24. "Despite being an ethnic Russian, he was born in Ukraine and raised in Ukrainian society," said his friend Volodymyr Zhemchuhov, a veteran from Luhansk who was imprisoned by Russians in Luhansk. "He fully respected Ukrainian language, Ukrainian history and Ukrainian culture.” Amid the war, both Russia and Ukraine have kept a tight lid of secrecy on their military casualties, but tens of thousands are believed to have died on both sides AP Video shot by Renata Brito =========================================================== Clients are reminded to adhere to all listed restrictions and to check the terms of their licence agreements.
