Chocolate... the first recorded preparation dates back almost 4000 years (1900BC in Mexico). Apparently it was the god Quetzalcoatl who shared it with us humans (which didn't go down well with the other heavenly beings). The art of the chocolatier is still going strong today, and nowhere stronger than in Fazenda Yrere, Bahia, Brazil. Their mission is to create sustainable, top quality, healthy chocolate... and boy do they achieve that goal! Before the cocoa crisis of the 90s, they were just churning out high volume/low quality cocoa. Afterwards they had to get creative. Brazil was fairly late to the game of Creative Industries - thinking outside the box to create new, high quality, innovative products, but Fazenda Yrere has really taken that ball and run with it. The tour lasts around 2 hours, costs R$30 each (£6/$9), involves a short hike through the grounds, an explanation of the creation process, and then a faceful of chocolate as you sample the various end products - 55-72% cocoa plus nibs. All the while, the local guides are sharing their wisdom and knowledge and answering any and all questions. It's definitely worth the trip if you're in Ilhéus, Bahia. If you're not in the area... GO! It's a beautiful part of the world. Check out their website at http://fazendayrere.blogspot.com.br/ If you liked the tour, be sure to like, subscribe and leave a comment below so I can feel the love.
