Established in 1966, Ahero Irrigation Scheme has over the past five decades become a crucial nerve in the survival of thousands of households in the neighbourhood. The flourishing irrigation scheme, which has made a name for itself in the production of rice is not only a source of food to millions of Kenyans but also a commercial hub offering jobs to farmers, suppliers, fleets of vehicles transporting the commodity as well as hundreds of retail shops in the region. At the Ahero Irrigation Scheme, groundwater irrigation is primarily achieved through the sinking of boreholes and the construction of canals that facilitate the distribution of water throughout the farming areas.
