Explained: What Is Diabetic Retinopathy And How Does It Cause Vision Loss?

World Diabetes Day is observed annually on November 14 to raise awareness about diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic condition characterised by high blood glucose levels due to the body’s inability to produce or effectively use insulin. A study by the Indian Council of Medical Research published last year estimates that approximately 10 crore people in India have the disease. Diabetes increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and Diabetic Retinopathy -- a severe eye condition. A study in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology found that close to 17 percent of people with diabetes also have Diabetic Retinopathy - which is caused by high blood sugar due to diabetes. According to experts, diabetes retinopathy can lead to vision loss or even blindness. It occurs when diabetes damages nerve tissues of the retina. Initially, patients may not notice any symptoms, but over time, they experience blurred visions or dark spots.
