F09 Net Zero Nutrients: Crowdsourcing the Next Metric

Our session is inspired by the understanding that in any sustainable system, waste must equal food. Engaging with nutrient flows, including human waste, is key to understanding our place in our environment and to solving our systemic problems of waste. This workshop, combining education and application, is aimed at creating a goal for green development that connects human nutrition and plant nutrition in a virtuous cycle. The Imperative is initially defined as Net-Zero Nutrients: returning as much nutrient content to the soil as is extracted from it to provide for human needs. Our session is designed to harness the wisdom of the Greenbuild crowd, newly armed with expert education, to begin to develop the metrics and appropriate scale for this new goal. Like net-zero energy and water before it, the goal of Net-Zero Nutrients could inspire design thought and practice and, ultimately, transform societal attitudes toward “waste.”
