It's almost tomato season, so we're going to cover everything you need to know about getting these four kinds going and growing! Right off the bat, let's cover some basics about starting them. Tomato seeds need warm soil, moisture, and some time. Give them those three, and you'll have seedlings in no time. SAUCE TOMATOES Romas are a favorite here, but there are tons of other varieties. We like them because they're prolific growers and taste great. Many sauce tomatoes are determinate, and that's because you get them all at once, so you need to use a lot at once. They don't get as big as indeterminate varieties, but you do want to give them a strong structure to grow on that can support lots of fruit at once. Pruning, spacing, and bottom watering are also important with these. CHERRY TOMATOES Lots of these little guys are just downright delicious! As indeterminates with small fruits (so they're not super heavy), we like the lower and lean method. You can easily find suckers to prune, and you can keep coiling the bottom of the plant so the fruits are easy to reach. SLICERS Also lumped together beefsteak tomatoes, these big boys get huge and heavy so they need a strong support system. You can still use plant clips or ties to keep them aligned with your trellis but keep an eye on those tomatoes as they get bigger. And to help them get nice and big, fertilizer and soil health is important. Before planting your tomatoes, it's a good idea to add compost and granular fertilizer to the growing area. You can also use a liquid fertilizer during the growing season. DWARF TOMATOES These are some of our new favorites! They're fantastic producers, and these pocket-sized varieties can be grown no matter what your gardening setup is. Pots and grow bags are a great option for dwarf varieties.
