Buried nearly 1,000 feet beneath southern Poland lies the Bochnia Salt Mine — one of the oldest salt mines in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site with nearly 1,000 years of history. What began in the 13th century as a royal investment in “white gold” evolved into a sprawling underground labyrinth stretching 37 miles across 16 levels. Yet today, only a fraction of it is open to the public. In this episode of It’s History, we venture beyond the tourist paths and into the forbidden corridors — exploring collapsing tunnels, abandoned leaching chambers untouched since the 1960s, and sacred chapels carved deep in the earth.
