Agra red fort

History of Agra Fort Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of India's most significant historical forts. It was the main residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638, when the capital shifted from Agra to Delhi. The fort has witnessed major events in Indian history, from the rise of the Mughal Empire to its decline. Early History The site of Agra Fort has been mentioned in historical records as early as the 11th century. It was originally a brick fort known as "Badalgarh," built by a Rajput ruler. Sikandar Lodi (1489–1517), the first Delhi Sultan to rule from Agra, used the fort as his residence. His son, Ibrahim Lodi, continued to use it until he was defeated by Babur in the First Battle of Panipat (1526). Mughal Era Babur (1526–1530): After defeating Ibrahim Lodi, Babur captured the fort and built a stepwell (Baoli) inside. Humayun (1530–1556): The fort remained under his rule, but he lost control of Agra for a period due to the Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri. Akbar (1556–1605): Recognizing Agra's strategic importance, Akbar rebuilt the fort in red sandstone (1565–1573). The fort took around eight years to complete. Jahangir (1605–1627): He used the fort mainly for administrative purposes and added some structures. Shah Jahan (1628–1658): Unlike his grandfather Akbar, Shah Jahan preferred white marble over red sandstone and made significant modifications to the fort. He built several palaces, such as the Khas Mahal and Sheesh Mahal. Aurangzeb (1658–1707): After imprisoning his father, Shah Jahan, in the fort's Musamman Burj, Aurangzeb ruled from there for a short period before shifting his focus to the Deccan. Decline and British Rule After the Mughal decline, the fort changed hands multiple times. It was captured by the Marathas, who were later defeated by the British in 1803. The British made several changes, converting some parts of the fort into military barracks. Architectural Features Agra Fort is a blend of Hindu and Islamic architecture. Important structures within the fort include: Amar Singh Gate: The main entrance today. Jahangir Mahal: A palace with a blend of Hindu and Persian styles. Diwan-i-Khas: The Hall of Private Audience. Diwan-i-Aam: The Hall of Public Audience. Musamman Burj: Where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by Aurangzeb. Sheesh Mahal: A palace with intricate mirror work. Significance Agra Fort played a crucial role in Mughal administration. It was the site of multiple battles, including the Maratha-Mughal conflicts. The fort's architecture influenced later Mughal structures, including the Red Fort in Delhi. Today, Agra Fort stands as a symbol of Mughal grandeur and remains a major tourist attraction.
