This MD900 is a rather rare, original variant of the type from 1996. Its serial number is 900/00041 meaning it was the 41st Explorer ever produced by MD Helicopters. After production in 1996 it flew for the US Coast Guard as 9041, then was sold to Politie Luchtvaart Dienst (Dutch Police Aviation) and flew as N9213Q. According to the photos available online, at this time it was still flying in the distinct red and white colours of the US Coast Guard, however N9213Q and 'Politie' was also written on it. After the Dutch Police it continued its journey with MD Helicopters and flew under a new registration, N902LH. From MD Helicopters it was sold to the United Arab Emirates' Government and flew as A6-JJJ, making it its last stop before becoming an Austrian rescue helicopter, OE-XII for Heli Austria GmbH. Unfortunately, they are becoming more and more rare to spot, especially as the MD900 was quickly succeeded by its newer, improved version the MD902. Thankfully, Heli Austria's air ambulance base in Matrei in Osttirol still operates this gorgeous machine in a picturesque scenery between the breathtaking mountains of Tirol in Austria. The MD Helicopters MD Explorer is a light twin-engined utility helicopter designed and initially produced by the McDonell Douglass Helicopter Systems. The initial model, the MD 900 (like the one in the video), was joined by an improved successor, the MD 902, during the late 1990s. The helicopter is noted for having no tail rotor, using the NOTAR technology instead, giving its tail a unique appearance and quieter sound profile than a more traditional tail rotor. Its NOTAR technology made it an attractive choice for HEMS (helicopter emergency medical services) operation and was used by various air ambulances around the world.
