(8 Jul 2019) ++SCRIPT UPDATED WITH MORE DETAILS AT 0900GMT++ North Koreans observed a three-minute silence at midday on Monday to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of leader Kim Il Sung. Kim Il Sung is still officially venerated inside North Korea as the founder of the country. People stopped, stood still and bowed in Kim Il Sung Square in the centre of Pyongyang. Around the capital, national flags were lowered. This three-minute silence does not happen every year on the anniversaries of deaths of North Korea's past leaders. It is an extra observance reinforcing veneration on special anniversaries, this time because it's the 25th. Crowds went through the routine of laying flowers and bowing at the main, giant statues of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il on Mansu Hill. Paying respects in this way is required on all main anniversaries and holidays, and not just at the giant statues in downtown Pyongyang, but at images of the past leaders all over the country. Kim Il Sung died in 1994, aged 82. He was succeeded by Kim Jong Il who was in power until his death in 2011. Kim Jong Un took over then, and North Korean authorities have continued to increase the requirements on citizens to demonstrate loyalty to this leadership system. Therefore, North Koreans are extremely careful when talking in public about their leaders, especially in front of foreign media.
