Millborn Seeds' Forage and Cover Crop Specialist, Justin Fruechte, teams up with Bil Schrader of Asmus Farm Supply to discuss Millborn's Nutrient Builder cover crop near land in Rake, IA. JUSTIN FRUECHTE: Hi this is Justin Fruechte with Millborn Seeds and we have Bil Schrader with Asmus Farm Supply. And we are down here by Rake, IA looking at some Nutrient Builder cover crop. Bil why don't you just walk us through and tell us why we've got some Nutrient Builder cover crop here in the middle of Iowa and why we've chosen to go with this blend. BIL SCHRADER: Thanks, Justin. In this area during this Spring of 2013 we had a tremendous amount of prevented plant acres. I got in contact with Justin and he helped formulate the Nutrient Builder mix for us. We thought it really focused in on some of the needs of what we want to do. It's predominantly radishes that we see out here today. But we have ryegrass, vetch, crimson clover, sun hemp - which we'll some of sticking above the canopy - and some lentils which we don't see much of. We have a nice mix of species out here. We were looking for ground cover, some nodulation, nutrient recycling, maybe breaking up a little compaction with some radishes as they grow along. Those were some of the things that we were trying to accomplish and Justin helped us out with it. JUSTIN FRUECHTE: I think anytime we go into these prevented plant acres and we have an opportunity to put a cover crop down for those reasons, we've always found that these blends do such a better job. We get that diversity factor working back on our soil that we just don't have anymore in a corn and soybean rotation. So we get multiple species out here. We are doing some great things biologically with that soil. We are keeping that soil alive during the entire growing season rather than keeping it fallow and doing nothing with it. So this is a great example to have the opportunity to go ahead and get a cover crop on, even though it's a poor situation you have prevent plant and the weather has been unfavorable. You can see what we can do to turn a negative situation into something positive...and getting the ground prepped better for the 2014 season when we come back in here with our normal cash crop. You have anything to add, Bil? BIL SCHRADER: I'm just really excited about how it's going to break down. It's new to all of us out here. We haven't had to deal with the prevented plant situation before. Hopefully we don't have to deal with anything like this for a long time again. But for what it offers for building the soil and what we're maybe going to gain in yield next year, I think everybody who is using it is just really excited to see how it turns out. ---- For more information, please contact Justin Fruechte at http://www.millbornseeds.com/cover.htm
