Boy, do I need a vacation! It's exhausting having so much fun shooting Boat Guy episodes. Being on boats, having fun, laughing with great people, going to new and interesting places, catching fish, making fun of Sam... it's tough! You think you have it bad at your job? Well, okay, so maybe I don't need a vacation, but I had some friends here from North Carolina for a week, so we hung out at my cabin near Port Townsend, WA. Frankly, there's no place on earth that I love being at more. I lost my dear friend John Potter in November. You can see our short video about John here. I still miss him every hour. Spending time at John's cabin, just down the beach from my place, were some of the happiest, most comfortable times of my adult life. Hanging out with John, drinking coffee, playing guitar in the mornings, then cooking dinner and playing more music over beers at night, was wonderful. Being there with John, my dog Bella, (and then Fergus after Bella died) curled up on the rug, were cherished times that I will remember forever. Well, it turns out, there's still music being played at John's place, dinners being cooked, coffee and beer being drunk, and people enjoying the rustic charm of John's cabin. Some things just work out as they should. John's family in Chico, CA wanted to keep John's cabin, but they didn't want it to be left unoccupied, so I introduced them to Sam (yep, our Sam, the damn camera man). It was decided that Sam would spend time and serve as caretaker at John's cabin. So, once again, The Boat Guy comes out looking good! I still have a wonderful friend, just down the beach in a little cabin, that I can play music with, have coffee and beer with, and continue to make fond memories. I only wish he wouldn't call me really early in the morning, convinced he is about to die in the deadly grip of a grizzly bear that's trapped in his wood stove. Chip Hanauer, The Boat Guy
