Lee (Rainford Hugh ) Perry was a groundbreaking Jamaican producer, singer, and sonic innovator who helped shape reggae and dub into global genres. His eccentric personality, experimental studio techniques, and collaborations with major artists—especially Bob Marley—made him one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. He was born 20 March 1936 in Kendal, Jamaica and died: 29 August 2021 in Lucea, Jamaica (age 85). He is known for Inventing and popularizing dub—a studio-heavy, echo filled, bass driven style and founding the Upsetter label and band. He produced early and iconic tracks for Bob Marley & The Wailers. Lee created the legendary Black Ark Studio, where he crafted his most experimental work. Perry’s studio innovations—tape manipulation, reverb, echo, and unconventional sound effects—reshaped how music could be produced. He is widely regarded as a visionary and one of the most important musical figures of the late 20th century.
