Check out the first video of this three part series: • Colosseum Mine of the California Mojave De... Today Cody and I will be passing through Ivanpah Mountains, Mesquite Wilderness, and Kingston Range Wilderness. Journey with us as we leave the Colosseum Mine and traverse through the picturesque Ivanpah Mountains, making our way to the breathtaking Mesquite Wilderness. Witness the gentle slopes of the Mesquite Mountains and the rocky majesty of the Clark Mountains, dotted with numerous small caves. Vegetation ranges from creosote brush sage on the bajadas to blackbrush, Joshua trees, and pinyon-juniper at higher elevations. Discover unique barrel cactus gardens and a rich tapestry of Mojave Desert wildlife. We then experience the diverse wonders of the Kingston Range Wilderness. The central Kingston Unit boasts a continuous 17-mile ridgeline above 6,000 feet, reaching an elevation of 7,323 feet at Kingston Peak. Meanwhile, the southern Shadow Mountain Unit encompasses the rounded peaks and meandering canyons of the Shadow Mountains, characterized by numerous erosion channels. As one of the most botanically diverse areas in the California Desert, the Kingston Range Wilderness is home to 505 native plant species, including 32 that are endangered, rare, or limited in distribution. The wilderness's vegetation and perennial water sources support a variety of wildlife, many of which are absent in nearby drier habitats. Bird densities and species diversity are notably higher, and the Kingston Mountains are one of the few places in California where the banded gila monster has been sighted. Other wildlife includes bighorn sheep, wild burros, coyotes, jackrabbits, ground squirrels, kangaroo rats, roadrunners, quail, rattlesnakes, tarantulas, and various lizard species. The southeastern portion of the wilderness is a critical habitat for the threatened desert tortoise.
