Marta Petrosillo, Director of Fundraising, PR and Communications at Caritas Internationalis, appeals to Caritas donors. "Dear benefactors, Dear friends, Since February 24th, the war in Ukraine has devastated more than 18 million lives and claimed at least 1,200 civilian victims. Unfortunately, some of them are children. The two Caritas organisations in the country, Caritas Ukraine and Caritas-Spes Ukraine, are helping the population by providing food, drinking water, shelter, psychological support and safe transportation. If we have been able and can continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the population, it is mainly thanks to your generosity, which has enabled us to support Caritas work in Ukraine. Today, unfortunately, the war has opened up a new tragic scenario. More than 2 million people have fled from the war in Ukraine to neighbouring countries, including Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova and Romania. About one million of them are children. It is the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since the second world war, and all Caritas organisations in neighbouring countries have been scaling up their work to provide assistance to people fleeing the conflict. The refugees are Ukrainians, but also people of other nationalities who had found refuge in Ukraine before the war. Caritas offers them a meal, clothes, hot drinks, a place to rest and tries to ensure their safety, also alerting them about the dangers they may find along the journey. Many of the refugees are women and children, and even unaccompanied minors, and therefore particularly vulnerable to human trafficking. These people need our help, and we need yours to continue helping them. Thank you very much!"
