Former Japanese Soldier's Photography Exhibition Shows Japan’s Atrocities during WWII

An exhibition of photographs taken by a former Japanese solider opened in Tokyo on Friday, clearly showing the Imperial Japanese army's atrocities in China during World War II. Murase Moriyasu, a former soldier who fought in Nanjing of China, took more than 3,000 photos when he was in China from 1937 to 1940. These rare historical photos show the reality of the Nanjing massacre and the direct involvement of Japanese army in coercing "comfort women", the forcible kidnapping, enslavement and rape of sex slaves during the war. A photo titled "Bodies piled on the shore of the Yangtze River" shows that corpses of Nanjing residents were dragged to the banks of Yangtze and thrown into the river. "There are voices in Japan denying these facts [the Nanjing Massacre and comfort women]. I believe this is unforgivable because we have all these photos as testimony. And since these photos are so valuable, we decided to hold this exhibition," said Tsuharu Yazakimi, head of the secretariat of the Japan-China Friendship Association, the exhibition's sponsor. In another photo, a truck carries a Japanese soldier and about 10 Korean comfort women, who were forced into sexual slavery during the war. The soldier can be clearly recognized as he wears a military cap. According to reports the Japanese army kidnapped at least 200,000 women from the Korean Peninsula, China, the Philippines and other occupied countries, forcing them to be prostitutes for the Japanese military during WWII. They built up comfort stations, stipulating specific provisions about how to use the women, which are clearly shown in Murase's photos. Despite the photographic evidence as well as testimony of former comfort women, some right-wing parties in Japan said that the government and army had no role in coercing women into working as prostitutes. They even said they want to revise the landmark Kono Statement, issued in 1993 by then Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono, that acknowledged and apologized for the Japanese military involvement in the comfort women system. "The Japanese government neither takes the responsibility nor makes any apologies. This country really makes people frustrated under the Abe administration. And these photos are really valuable materials, I hope more and more people will be able to see them," said a visitor at the exhibition. "I think using photos instead of words to show these facts is the best education for my child," said a father who took his son to the exhibition. Yazakimi further pointed out that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's historical denial and revision will cause enormous danger to the country. "Japan even wants to change its Constitution, which is a very dangerous move, and we will never allow such thing to happen, of the distortion and fabrication of history," Yamakimi added.
