Being nervous before your fight is normal! Your body responds in a with a fight or flight mechanism with a surge of adrenaline, it doesn’t matter if you need to fight, or a lion is coming and you need to fly on out of there, your body is doing the same thing. What a lot of guys do is they let that psych them out into thinking they’re scared, and once that thought penetrates you, that’s it, you won’t be able to perform. You're nervous, you're not scared. Letting actual fear, mental, not physiological fear take over, you might as well be paralyzed, you’re going to be running into shots and not running away from them. Your timing will be off, you’ll find you’re tripping over your feet, it’s a not pretty sight. What you have to do is recognize that the physical feeling is normal. Every fighter you ever admired has felt the same thing, if you heard Tyson talk about it he says when he was in the back room he was scared to death, scared of losing, scared of getting embarrassed, and by the time he got to the ring he felt like a god. If you look at tapes of Floyd, one of the best and most composed fighters of all time, his eyes are chinky and watery before a fight starts, he clenches his mouthpiece, he doesn’t look at his opponent, the nerves are there, he’s not scared, he’s just experiencing the thing he knows is natural and as soon as the fight starts he KNOWS and has the CONFIDENCE that he is going to perform despite all these pre-fight feelings. You then have to change your self talk You have to change the conversation you have before the fight, instead of telling yourself that you’re a coward for your heart racing, say damn I’m excited, I can’t wait to get my hands on him, and look at him in the eye and think “why did you even show up!” Scientists have proven to be in a confident state actually increases your performance, so if you want to fight better, think better. You can practice this during training through affirmations. You see Mayweather doing this all throughout his training when he says things to himself. It’s all brainwashing your subconscious mind. He says things like “all i ever thought about was winning, so that’s all I do” or when he says “I eat pizza, I drink soda, I hangout with chicks all day, and these fighters still can’t beat me, they be in the gym all the time, just give me 6 weeks and I got him.” He probably said that because he caught himself being insecure about his short camp, but he switched up that self-talk. That’s what you have to do. When you’re on the bag when you’re shadowboxing, say confidence-inducing things, be a savage! You also have to change your physiology. A lot of what we think mentally causes are body to do certain things, but in the same token, a lot of what we do physically causes are mind to think certain things, things like posture, tension, etc. So you want to evoke your primal instincts, bang your gloves together, beat on your chest, stomp your feet, get in the mind of a warrior caveman who is about to go to war for the pride of his people. Its chimp vs chimp! There is no room for civility here until after the fight is done. Watch the video for more! Checkout https://www.Brawlbros.com/shop for our merch!
