Jeffrey Hoffman MOXIE, the Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment, represents the first demonstration of ISRU technology on another planetary body. An experiment inside NASA’s Mars2020 Perseverance rover, MOXIE has successfully produced oxygen from the carbon dioxide that comprises ~95% of the Martian atmosphere. This talk will describe how MOXIE works and what it has accomplished so far. The talk will also give an overview of the Mars2020 Perseverance mission.Learning Outcomes:1. Why is producing oxygen on Mars important for human missions?Answer – Large amount of oxygen needed for Mars ascent vehicle (as opposed to just producing oxygen to breathe).2. What are the major changes needed to turn MOXIE into an operational system for a human mission?Answer – Needs to be scaled up by several hundred times. Needs to run continuously. Needs to operate autonomously.3. MOXIE requires a lot of electrical power. What are the elements that require power? Answer: Heating the system, running the compressor, electrolysis of CO2.
