Bach's Chorale Prelude 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme' - known in English as 'Sleepers Awake' - derives from a movement in his Church Cantata of the same name. It was arranged for orchestra in 1945 by Sir Granville Bantock, a British composer whose catalogue includes an enormous number of works, ranging from operas and symphonies to song cycles and piano solos. Although Bantock has been described by one commentator as "unreasonably neglected," many of his compositions have been recorded and very well received on various labels. In his book entitled "Recording British Music," Lewis Foreman reveals that he was largely responsible for many of these Bantock recordings and reveals his delight at their success. Many examples from them can be heard here on YouTube. The present performance of Bantock's 'Wachet auf' arrangement was played by the Royal Philharmonic in a Proms 2010 'Bach Transcriptions' Concert conducted by Andrew Litton.
