In Pakistan, rising temperatures during June and July can seriously affect rice crops, especially at the flowering and grain formation stages. Heat stress during these critical periods can reduce pollination, increase sterility, and ultimately lower yield. Therefore, selecting heat-tolerant rice varieties has become extremely important for farmers, particularly in Punjab and Sindh. Among basmati types, Super Basmati has traditionally been cultivated widely, but it is relatively sensitive to extreme heat at flowering. A better improved option is Basmati 515, which shows better tolerance to high temperature and gives stable yields under heat stress. Another improved option is Basmati 700, known for comparatively stronger plant vigor and improved adaptability in warmer conditions. For non-basmati (coarse) rice growers, IRRI-6 is commonly grown and performs reasonably well under high temperatures, especially in Sindh. However, KSK-133 is considered more heat tolerant and suitable for areas facing extreme summer temperatures. It also has good yield potential and strong plant structure. In southern Punjab and Sindh where temperatures are extremely high, hybrid rice varieties are also being adopted because many hybrids show better stress tolerance and higher recovery after heat waves. Farmers should also manage sowing time carefully — early transplanting helps avoid peak heat during flowering. Proper irrigation management and maintaining standing water during hot spells can significantly reduce heat damage. In conclusion, for heat resistance in Pakistan, Basmati 515, Basmati 700, and KSK-133 are currently among the better-performing options depending on whether you are growing basmati or coarse rice. Final selection should depend on your region, water availability, and market demand. Always consult local agriculture extension services before finalizing seed selection.
