The Forgotten Victory: Battle of Bomarsund 1854 - The Baltic Campaign That Shaped the Crimean War While most people associate the Crimean War with battles at Balaclava and the Charge of the Light Brigade, the first Allied victory actually took place 1,000 miles away in the Baltic Sea. This is the untold story of the Battle of Bomarsund and how the Royal Navy's Baltic campaign played a crucial role in shaping the entire conflict. In March 1854, as Britain and France declared war on Russia, Admiral Sir Charles Napier led a formidable fleet of 44 ships carrying nearly 2,200 guns into the Baltic. His mission: implement a naval blockade, threaten St. Petersburg, and tie down Russian forces far from the main Crimean theatre. Commanding from HMS Duke of Wellington, the eccentric 68-year-old admiral promised to give the Russians "the old Nelson trick." But when expectations of a dramatic assault on the mighty Kronstadt fortress protecting St. Petersburg failed to materialize, Napier faced fierce criticism. Instead, he set his sights on a more achievable target: the unfinished Russian fortress at Bomarsund on the Åland Islands. The Battle of Bomarsund in August 1854 became the war's first Allied victory, featuring 5,000 French soldiers and 2,900 British forces including Royal Marines and sailors. During the earlier bombardment in June, Mate Charles Lucas performed the heroic act that would earn him the first-ever Victoria Cross recommendation - throwing a live Russian shell overboard just before it exploded. This forgotten campaign achieved remarkable strategic success: 60% of the Russian Baltic fleet remained bottled up, over 200,000 Russian troops were tied down defending St. Petersburg, and crucial economic pressure was applied through the naval blockade. Meanwhile, wealthy "Travelling Gentlemen" watched the battle unfold from their yachts, including Reverend Robert Hughes who provided vivid eyewitness accounts. Though overshadowed by later Crimean battles, the Baltic campaign under Napier - and later at Sveaborg fortress - proved that sometimes hidden operations win wars through economic pressure and strategic resource denial rather than glorious charges. Discover how this overlooked naval campaign helped bring Russia to the negotiating table and why Admiral Napier deserves better than history's harsh judgment. #BattleOfBomarsund #CrimeanWar #RoyalNavy #VictoriaCross #BalticCampaign #ForgottenHistory Chapters: 0:00 Introduction 0:57 Crimean War 1:32 Baltic Strategy 4:05 Admiral Sir Charles Napier 6:22 Royal Navy Fleet 7:17 Sets Sails for Baltic 9:06 Russian Baltic Fleet 10:52 Bomarsund Expedition 11:53 First Ever Victoria Cross 12:40 Gentlemen Travellers 15:09 Bombardment Commences 15:34 Victoria Cross Stories 17:58 Battle of Bomarsund 20:18 Russian POWs in England 20:54 1854 Baltic Campaign Ends 22:21 Was Campaign a Success?
