INSIGHT 2023 Replay from the Clinical Research Track: Talk – Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa: Clinical and Therapeutic Insights from a Pilot Study Dr. Frederico Magalhaes Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is one of the most severe psychiatric conditions, with high mortality, limited pharmacological options, and low remission rates. In this talk, Dr. Frederico Magalhaes presents key findings and therapeutic reflections from a groundbreaking pilot study investigating psilocybin-assisted therapy for adults with AN who have not responded to conventional treatments. Participants received three supported psilocybin sessions over four weeks (up to 25mg per dose), embedded within a robust therapeutic framework. The approach combined elements of emotion-focused family therapy, compassion-focused therapy, psychodynamic theory, the ACE model, Groffian perspectives, and third-wave CBT modalities. Each participant identified a “support person” involved throughout the therapeutic process, enhancing continuity and integration. The presentation addresses both the clinical structure and human experience of this innovative intervention—covering challenges in medical and psychotherapy screening, therapeutic relationship building, session themes, difficult experiences, supervision strategies, and the unique complexities of treating individuals with AN.
