Hanoch Jacoby: King David's Lyre for Viola and Piano, 1948 46:00 This is a search in word and in sound after the musical roots and development of three composers with somewhat similar biography; Paul Ben-Haim (1897-1984), Josef Tal (1910-2008) and Hanoch Jacoby (1909-1990) had to immigrate from Germany in 1933-1934 to what was then Palestine, literally a desert in the middle east. There was not yet infrastructure or a stable musical community. These composers came into the unknown and helped create Israel's musical identity. They had also to consider how they approach composing in a landscape so different to their homeland. Did they search for a new musical language? Did they stick to their origins? were they trying to stay up to date with the world's developments? It seems that each one of them had his own way and approach. I am gratful to Jehoash Hirshberg and Irit Youngerman who agreed to be interviewd in between the musical perforemences for this occasion and share their knowledge.
