Sunday January 22, 1989 Superbowl 23 vs Cincinnati Bengals Everyone remembers Joe Montana's two minute drive and John Taylor's final touchdown catch at the end of the game, but there were many other outstanding plays during this 49er 20-16 Superbowl victory. This clip contains Ronnie Lott delivering a crushing blow to running back James Brooks which you could hear for miles. The next scene shows Lott launching himself from 15 yards away at Ick Woods who gets down in time to watch Lott fly over the top of him. The next scene is rookie Bill Romanowski batting a Boomer Esiason pass into the air and intercepting it. The final highlight unfortunately is Stanford Jennings returning a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. it was a crushing blow for the Niners but I had to include it here. 49ers starting offense: Joe Montana QB Roger Craig RB Tom Rathman FB John Taylor WR Jerry Rice WR John Frank TE Steve Wallace LT Jesse Sapolu LG Randy Cross C Guy McIntyre RG Harris Barton RT 49ers starting defense: Larry Roberts LDE Michael Carter NT Kevin Fagan RDE Charles Haley LOLB Jim Fahnhorst LILB Mike Walter RILB Keena Turner ROLB Tim McKyer LCB Don Griffin RCB Jeff Fuller SS Ronnie Lott FS The idea behind this playlist is to start the first highlight and let it roll through them all, or as long as you can. I spent many many years acquiring these highlights on VHS tapes and then copying pieces of each to compile a highlight film. This was all completed in the early 2000s. It is meant to jump you all around the 49er world through the end of 1998, after which Steve Young's concussion and subsequent retirement ended the Niners 17 years of dominance.
