The universe contains hundreds of billions of galaxies. Each galaxy holds hundreds of billions of stars. Around many of those stars orbit planets — some of which may be similar to Earth. With numbers like these, the universe should be filled with life. Perhaps even intelligent civilizations far more advanced than our own. So why does the cosmos seem so quiet? In this video, we explore one of the most famous questions in modern science: why we haven’t found evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations. This mystery is known as the Fermi Paradox. If intelligent life could emerge on countless worlds across the universe, then where is everybody? Using ideas from astronomy, cosmology, and the study of exoplanets, we look at several possible explanations — from the rarity of intelligent life to the possibility that advanced civilizations may be hidden or incredibly difficult to detect. Perhaps intelligent life is extremely rare. Perhaps civilizations rarely survive long enough to explore the stars. Or perhaps the universe is far stranger than we currently understand. The silence of the cosmos might not mean we are alone. It may simply mean we have only just begun to listen.
